Humpday Hints: The Bedroom Closet

San Diego Master Closet

Carlsbad, CA–It might be a San Diego home seller’s worst nightmare, but potential buyers DO want to see closets–and especially ones in the bedrooms and kitchen. Most homeowners would give up the kitchen pantry and under-sink area ten times over rather than have the master bedroom closet open to the world.

But that’s not how showings work.

This week’s article cuts to the chase, and offers 6 tips for having a fabulous closet that brings a smile and sigh of relief to the owner, whether the home is on the market or not:

  1. Start by emptying the closet of everything that is not on a hanger. If it’s something you haven’t used in a year or wonder why you ever purchased it in the first place, mercilessly throw into one of two piles: Trash or Donation. Next tackle items on hangers and go through same elimination process.
  2. Forget about saving those “skinny” jeans. If you lost the weight you want, reward yourself with a new pair of designer jeans–or whatever fits the occasion.
  3. Throw away all wire hangers and plastic dry cleaner wrap. Wire hangers are tacky and don’t provide adequate support for the prized remaining items of clothing–and that plastic wrap doesn’t allow clothing to breathe and traps in odors from dry cleaning products. Replace the wire hangers with low profile flocked ones that are available in almost every sore that offers more than cigarettes, gas and milk.
  4. Study remaining available space. Is there room to hang a shoe rack over a door or add shelf extenders to existing shelves? Is there room to add hooks on empty wall space? And what about floor space under clothing rods for storage boxes or shoe racks? Study space carefully for previously unrecognized opportunities!
  5. Re-hang chosen remaining clothing by type and color. This will help speed up dressing choices on those busy mornings when the alarm went on snooze one too many times–or when a quick change is needed between work and play.
  6. If space is still too tight and hangers are close to overlapping, move special occasion clothing and shoes to another closet or into wardrobe boxes that slide under the bed.

Plan on spending 4 to 6 hours on re-organizing and cleaning out your master bedroom closet. It’s a major project for San Diego home owners, but one well worth the effort. Buyers instinctively respond to neat and well-organized closets and a bit of transference takes place: They envision that the contents of their closet(s) will fit just as neatly.
